People used the Internet to make Easter related purchases

Web traffic and sales statistics have proven that Internet sales are finally penetrating one of the last areas of the retail industry that has historically been dominated by the High Street stores, Easter.

MyVoucherCodes has revealed that on the run up to this year’s Easter celebrations the company has seen the number of people visiting its site to buy Easter Eggs and Easter Gifts increase by more than 50% when compared to this time last year.

The company has reported that historically the big retail periods such as Christmas, Mothers Day and Valentine’s Day have slowly seen a gradual increase in buyers using the Internet instead of the High Street but until this year Easter has always been dominated by High Street sales.

Instead of the same gradual switch to shopping online for the Easter season, 2008 has seen a sudden and comparatively large spike in sales. MyVoucherCodes estimates that £1.1m has been spent via its own site alone this year on Easter items.

Speaking about the statistics the Managing Director of MyVoucherCodes, Mark Pearson said: “2008 has seen a massive increase in people using the web to make Easter related purchases and it looks as though; just as it is for the celebrations such as Christmas, people want to get the best deals and are hunting down the best bargains and discounts via the web”.

He continued: “There are very few events in the social calendar where High Street retailers have the dominance over web sales and some of the huge offers and discounts on Easter related goods by the big four supermarkets shows that they are going to fight hard to keep their market share”.
