Simpsonised Woolworths brand characters support the launch of The Simpsons Movie
(07/12/2007)
Woolworths has secures the services of the animators from the Simpsons to draw an image, signed by Matt Groening himself, for its advertising for the release of The Simpsons Movie – out on DVD on Monday. It is the first time the cartoonists have ever drawn for a retailer anywhere in the world.
Groening’s team has ‘Simpsonised’ popular Woolworths brand characters Wooly & Worth and drawn them sitting in the Simpsons’ front room on the sofa normally occupied by Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie.
The image is being worked into ads that will be used online, in press, in-store and on TV next week. The DVD is expected to be one of the biggest selling films this Christmas.
Alan Hunt, DVD and CD trading manager for Woolworths, says: “The movie will be a massive seller with over one million people expected to snap up the DVD version in the fist week alone. The fact that the Simpsons animators have agreed to draw for us is quite something and it has made our ads really stand out. It’s been a busy year for Wooly & Worth, they’ve met Westlife, Kelly Osbourne and Rolf Harris and now they’ve been given a makeover by world’s most popular cartoonists!”
Woolworths stores are also changing their look for the release of the film. 200 of the company’s shops are replacing the first two Os in the Woolworths signage with Simspons-style doughnuts for the week. A sign advising customers not to try the doughnuts is being prepared.
A further five stores will be ‘Simpsonised’ and have their traditional red frontage replaced by ‘Simpsons yellow’ and lifesize versions of Bart and Homer will be in the window and working as meeters and greeters at the stores.
The Simpsons Movie is released on Monday 10th December and is available at Woolworths stores.
