The Flowers & Plants Association has a few hints and tips on getting the most out of Valentine's Day flowers:

Roses
Roses are thirsty flowers. Find a clean container, add fresh flower food, fill two-thirds with water, remove any leaves or thorns that will be under the water level, and cut to size; making sure the cut is on an extreme angle. Completely change or top up the water every three days and they'll last up to two weeks.

Mixed flowers
Rather than displaying in a single vase, why not split a bunch of flowers into groups? You can create mini bunches for different rooms in the house, or divide the flowers by type for a clean look. Individual flowers look fabulous slotted into lots of different bottles or containers displayed together.

But I don't like them...
Rather than hurt his feelings, why not make the most of them? If you've been given a flower that's not your thing, you can jazz it up by adding pins, gems and ribbon. Chrysanthemums look fabulous cut short and displayed en masse in a series of cups or cute jugs.

Flowers? What flowers?
He probably thinks he doesn't have to woo you anymore! If you buy your own flowers regularly enough he'll hopefully get the hint that you like them. If he thinks he's safer leaving it up to you to buy your own flowers, sigh and say 'I wish I could treat myself to those gorgeous [insert flowers name] but they're really for a special occasion!'
If you're single, why not remind yourself how wonderful you are and buy a bunch of luxury, scented flowers like hyacinths; or a dramatic, architectural flower like amaryllis?

Arranging them – where do I start?
You'll find care tips and over 800 simple arranging ideas at tryflowers.org.uk. It's got a brand new look, and you can search for flower "recipes" using the flower you've been given, as well as ideas by colour, room or occasion!
