Buying a gift from Save the Children's Wish List and help change the life of a vulnerable child
(19/02/2010)
For many mothers around the world, chocolates, flowers and meals out are a million miles away from their reality. Save the Children is encouraging the public to buy a gift in a million for their mothers. An alternative 'Wish List' gift can give mums in some of the world's poorest places what they really want - a future for their children.
The charity's virtual gift range offers alternative gifts for those that want to make Mother's Day that little bit special - and make a life saving difference in the process! People simply buy their chosen gift online, a card is sent to their mother in the UK and Save the Children will deliver their chosen gift to mother and child.
A gift such as Save the Children's Baby Kit will provide the essentials to ensure a new born baby survives the first few hours, days and months - a perfect gift of any new Mum. Included in the kit is a warm baby blanket, a little hat, cotton nappies, little vests, Vaseline, soap and a soft towel.
Val Culff from Somerset, who received a baby kit from her daughter Hannah for
Mother's Day last year said: "Mother's Day has become so commercial. I really don't want my children spending their money on overpriced flowers. It's far more rewarding to receive a gift that not only shows my children are caring and thoughtful, but that will make a huge difference to a mother somewhere else in the world."
In 2009, Wish List provided 469 baby kits. Many of these went to women and children in counties like Zimbabwe, which has the lowest life expectancy in the world.
One doctor from the Yiliqi township hospital in China where baby kits are distributed said: "Sending baby kits to young mother in the hospital can encourage women to give birth in hospital instead of delivery in their home, it is very helpful to reduce mortality rate of young mother and their baby"
By buying a gift from their Mothers' Day Wish List you will be helping change the life of a vulnerable child and in the process making your mum, and those all over the world, happy.
