Cycling, the alternative to gym membership
(19/02/2008)
If you have started the New Year with a promise to lose weight, get in shape or be kinder to the environment, then cycling could help you achieve all three in one go. If you are finding it hard to find the time to ride your bike then why not cycle to work if it’s not too far. Commuting by bike gets you fit without realising it. Cycling to work is less stressful than driving or using overcrowded public transport and by reducing your car use you are helping the environment.
The right kit will make a massive difference to your comfort and enjoyment and it doesn’t have to cost the earth either. Modern cycling equipment is bristling with technical innovations and the latest clothing is flattering as well as functional. Gender specific products means there is no excuse for having badly fitting clothing or the wrong size of bike anymore.
For the same price as a year’s gym membership you could have a bike and all the necessary accessories to make cycling easier and more enjoyable whatever the season.
A decent bike, that won’t fall apart after a month of riding, will set you back about £300. There has never been a better range of bikes for all disciplines and sexes and they are now more affordable than ever. For £30 you can get yourself a comfortable, lightweight helmet that passes all relevant safety standards. Waterproof jackets with reflective strips that combine comfort, practicality and safety start from around £50. With winter gloves from around £20 you can have all the gear you need to get started for around £400, that’s usually less than a year’s gym membership.
Here is an example of the kit you can get for around £400:
Men’s kit
Pinnacle Peak 1.0 Men’s Mountain bike - £299.99
Giro Indicator helmet - £29.99
Altura Crosslight Ultralight jacket - £59.99
Endura full Monty Glove - £19.99
Women Specific Kit
Specialized Myka Sport Women’s mountain bike - £299.99
Specialiized Chamonix Women’s helmet - £29.99
Pearl Izumi Women’s Vagabond Jacket - £49.99
Altura Women’s Mistral Glove - £14.99
“To make cycling more enjoyable, the right kit is a must” says Claire Beaumont, Evans Cycles’ fitness expert. “Make sure your bike fits you properly, is in good working order and treat yourself to some new kit to make you look forward to going out riding. It’s these little things that can make a massive difference and helps keep you motivated to go out.”
